In 1893, Lacombe met Paul Serusier, who introduced him to the Nabis. Serusier’s influence is evident in this painting, which is steeped in mystery and rendered with flat, outlined patches of colour. This is one of the few paintings Lacombe made during his stays in Brittany —most often in Camaret on the south coast— between 1888 and 1897.
