Brick-lined Privy Pit

National Park Service2003

National Constitution Center

National Constitution Center
Philadelphia, PA, United States

Archeologists unearthed objects and fragments from trash deposits, wells, and privies (outdoor toilets) while excavating the site of the National Constitution Center. Today, these privy pits and trash deposits serve as time capsules. Their soil layers reveal information about the people who lived and worked in the city. This privy pit was located at the residence of James Dexter, a free African-American coachman.
