Born in Moss, Norway, Lie was the son of a civil engineer. He worked as a designer for a textile factory, taking evening art classes in New York. He traveled widely over the course of his career and is well known for industrial scenes. Here, he shows the Brooklyn Bridge from a rat's eye view, with dockworkers and tugs busy below the symbol of American strength and progress.
