About the artist: John “Jack” Dyer graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserve. Dyer worked as an art teacher and artist for the Boston Globe. He was recalled to active duty in 1966 as a combat artist. Dyer became the first curator of the Museum’s art collection and the program manager of the Marine Corps Combat Art Program in 1971. In the tragic aftermath of the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon in 1983, he was recalled to active duty. Jack Dyer died in 2014.
