Bronze bells were among the most important ritual objects used in Korean Buddhist temples. The bronze bell shown here is presumed to have been made by Goryeo artisans between the 13th and 14th centuries. In Korea, metal-casting techniques achieved considerable progress during the Unified Silla Period (676-935), eventually resulting in the development of “Korean bells” with their own unique style. The style of Korean temple bells underwent significant changes during the late Goryeo (918-1392) period, including the protruded floral design that can be seen encircling the upper part of the bells on display.
