Bronze Mirror Featuring Linked Arcs on Foundation of Cloud and Triangle Patterns

Yangzhou Museum

Yangzhou Museum
Yangzhou, China

Excavated from the Warring-states Tomb in Orchard Brick Factory, Xihu town, suburbs of Yangzhou city in 1993, this piece is characteristic of bronze mirrors that were popular in State Chu during the mid-and-late years of the Warring States period (475-221 BC). With a three-edge knob inserted onto a round dent, the thin mirror features on its back eight arcs linked together on a foundation of cloud and triangle thunder motifs. While a circle of rope patterns dividing the mirror back into two sections, the intersection points of these curved lines situated in the inner part end up in the outer area, which is outlined with another circle of rope patterns.
