This bronze vessel—referred to in China as a bianhu (BEE-an-hoo) or "flat vessel"—dates to the Warring States period (475-221 BC). It is a ritual vessel that once held wine and would have eventually been buried with its owner. The flat-sided design of this vessel has been in continuous use for 2,000 years. Similar pieces can be found through the centuries in the Middle East, China, and England, made of pottery, bronze, and porcelain.
