Bronze relic-box for a mummified falcon

British Museum

British Museum
London, United Kingdom

Smaller mummified animals and birds were placed inside bronze boxes, on top of which a three-dimensional image of the creature was often mounted. This box was made to contain the mummy of falcon, and is adorned with a figure of the bird. Hawk and falcon catacombs have been excavated in Tuna el-Gebel and Saqqara, though we do not know from where this box originally came.
