A proposal for 'The Browsing Line' from Humphry Repton's book 'Observations on the Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening', published by J Taylor in London, 1803. Repton writes, 'In the .... sketch I have represented a view of that long skreen [screen] at Milton Abbey, which shuts out Castor Field, and which is certainly not a pleasing feature, from its presenting not only a straight line at the bottom, but the trees being all of the same age; the top line is also straight. This skreen forms the back ground of a view taken from the approach, and the slide represents the difference between an attempt to break the uniformity of the plain by open and close plantations.'
