Elize Segar created Popeye in 1929. Segar drew for King Features and had drawn the "Thimble Theatre" strip that was based on the story of the Oyl family. This story line revolved around the love interest between Olive Oyl and her boyfriend Ham Gravy. When the Oyls purchased a large boat, and later realized they didn't know how to sail it, Castor Oyl (Olive's brother) searched the docks for help. He found a sailor named Popeye and asked, "Hey there, are you a sailor?" Popeye replied, "Ja think I'm a cowboy?" Two years later, the comic strip evolved to focus on Popeye's adventures of protecting Olive, his love interest, and of doing good deeds with the aid of spinach. Popeye was coarse but pure in heart and he has become an icon.
