Mickey Mouse made his film debut in 1928 in the world’s first synchronized-sound cartoon, “Steamboat Willie.” Mickey soon became an iconic face. Story goes that in 1929, a man waved $300 at Walt Disney and asked to put the mouse on paper tablets for children to use in school. The Disney brothers needed the cash. They also recognized that there might be other ways to use Mickey’s image on products. In 1930, Charlotte Clark was commissioned to create the first stuffed Mickey doll, which was an instant success. Over the years, Mickey appeared in many more cartoons and comic strips; he acquired a female companion, Minnie Mouse, and many friends like Donald Duck, Goofy, and Pluto; and he was featured in Disney’s international line of theme parks, video games, and toys.
