Bucket-shape water jar with ash glaze, Tamba ware

Between the end of the Muromachi period and Momoyama period (latter half of the sixteenth century), wabi-cha tea in pursuit of simplicity became popular and this paved way for the use of mizusashi (pitcher), an implement used to place clean water for tea ceremonies, to allure to daily wooden products such as a pail. This resulted in the creation of pail-shaped pitchers in Tamba.
