A copper alloy, shoe buckle dating to c.1730s. Shoe buckles became popular during the early 1700s. Early buckles were small and plain, becoming more elaborate through time. From 1769 buckles were often machine made using stamping machines. By the early 1790s they fell out of fashion with civilians but continued to be used by the military until the 19th century.
