The Buddha is depicted at the moment of his victory over the forces of evil, when he took his right hand from his lap (where it had been resting as he meditated) and touched the earth. Following the emergence of Sukhothai as an independent kingdom in the late 13th century, a new style of Buddha image was developed in Siam (Thailand).
