Early 20th century

Macau Museum

Macau Museum
Lisbon, Portugal

A specimen signed by Pun Yu Shu, a ceramic artista, author of popular art pieces. He was a disciple of the renowned ceramic master of shek Wan, Chen Wei Nam.

Silva Mendes, an art collector, ordered it from Pun Yu Shu, thus making it a unique piece.

Silva Mendes is the first European to collect Shek Wan ceramic works of high quality.

This statuette of Buddha, striking in expression as well as in colour displays marked characteristics of Buddhist statuary art: the meditative attitude in a sitting position and half-closed eyes, the long ear lobes implying health and longevity, and his obesity the sign of abundance, prosperity and subsequent happiness.
