Buffalo Robe of Mandan Mató-Tópe

The buffalo skin, in multicolor displaying the chief’s heroic deeds, is decorated with birds quill, horses hair wrapped with quill and a few early glass beads. It is assumed that Mató Tópe was inspired by Karl Bodmer and earlier painters (e.g. George Catlin) from whom he might even have received materials.
