Buildings Made of Sky I

A photographic suite of upside-down Manhattan streetscapes, Buildings Made of Sky presents the canyons between skyscrapers as buildings, each a different shade of blue. In this way, it draws our attention to the forgotten edge between things. In the 2008 SFMOMA exhibition Cut: Revealing the Section, Buildings Made of Sky was presented as a meditation on the idea of the section, a vertical cut through space. A primary means by which architects visualize spatial adjacencies and discontinuities, the section remains elusive to those not trained in the design disciplines. Initially Peter Wegner's sky buildings, too, might escape our eye's comprehension. Like a surgeon cutting the body, designers and artists use the section to go beyond the surface of things, revealing systems and qualities that would otherwise remain hidden from view.
