Bukdongjeokdae (Northeastern Gate Guard Platform)

1794/1796

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress
suwon-si, South Korea

Jeokdae is a turret erected on a bastion of a fortress.  A jeokdae was built on each bastion on both sides of Janganmun (North Gate) and Paldalmun (South Gate), two of the four main gates of Hwaseong Fortress. The one on the east of Janganmun is as tall as the fortress wall. The three vertical loopholes on the lower side of the bastion were made to allow troops to observe and fire at an approaching enemy.
