Bulgarian Banner

This banner is part of the museum's Community Banners project, 'Memories and Dreams'. It is symbolic of Bulgarian immigrants' experiences in South Australia.
The immigration of Bulgarians to Australia is depicted by an ocean route between the two countries. Scenes of life in the homeland and the new country surround this central image. The question mark highlights the fears of immigrants as they begin their journey. This journey is represented by the boat, which is also a symbol of hope.
A member of the group that made the banner said: ‘Even though many Bulgarians settled and worked hard in their market gardens, they still managed to keep the traditions of the old country’.
