Bulto of Saint Vincent Ferrer

Glencairn Museum

Glencairn Museum
Bryn Athyn, United States

“Vincent Ferrer (1350–1419) entered the Dominican order in 1367, and thereafter devoted his life to preaching, travelling through Spain, France, Italy, and possibly England and Scotland. He gained a reputation as one of the greatest preachers of his day, becoming renowned for moving sinners to repentance and converting Jews to Christianity. A constant theme in Vincent’s preaching was the Last Judgment. Consequently, he is customarily portrayed pointing toward Heaven and with angel wings, as he was regarded as the ‘Angel of Judgment.’” (Rev. Joseph F. Chorpenning, O.S.F.S., S.T.L., Ph.D., notes in curatorial file for 12.SP.476)
