Bunkado is currently owned by Irene Tsukada Simonian, daughter of founders Tokio and Suye Ueyama, who opened the store in 1945. Today the gift shop is managed by fifth-generation Japanese American and family member, Dane Ishibashi. Dane stepped outside of the store one Saturday afternoon to greet Mariko Lochridge and other participants of L.A. Conservancy's Boot Camp, who were learning about community efforts to preserve Little Tokyo's legacy businesses.
