The Latin inscription was located on the outside, near the main apse of the Cathedral of Trento, at a height of about two metres. In 1991, it was removed from its original position for reasons involving its preservation, and it was replaced by a copy.
The text of the inscription is extraordinarily important, because it documents the date work began to rebuild the Cathedral (29 February 1212). It also indicates the name of the person responsible for promoting the enterprise, bishop Federico Vanga, and the foreman responsible for the site, Adamo d’Arogno. He worked on the Cathedral for almost twenty-five years, before passing the assignment on to his descendants.
Translation of the inscription.
In the year of our Lord 1212, on the last day of February, in the presence of and by order of the venerable bishop of Trento Federico Vanga, Master Adamo d’Arogno of the diocese of Como began and worked on construction of this church. He, his children, and his grandchildren masterfully fabricated the perimeter of this church, with its interior and exterior accessories. He and his descendants are buried below here. Pray for them.
