Burial of Jesus

Dirck van Baburen17th century

Musée Bertrand
Châteauroux, France

This painting is one of many variants and copies of one of the most famous religious compositions of the 17th century—The Burial of Jesus by Dirck van Baburen.
Interpretations of this painting—some of better, some of worse quality—have been found mainly in French provincial churches. On account of the craftsmanship and pictorial treatment, this work is without a doubt a copy created by an anonymous French artist. Here he faithfully reproduced the page layout of the Utrecht Caravaggisti (Baroque artists influenced by the art of Caravaggio). Joseph ofArimathea, assisted by Nicomedes (as described in the Gospel of John), places the body of Christ wrapped in a shroud in the tomb. Although suffering, the Virgin Mary assists, accompanied by the two Marys (according to Matthew and Mark).
Based on the texts by Sandrine Le Bideau in the catalog Flemish and Dutch paintings—Collection of the Châteauroux museums (Peintures Flamande et Hollandaise—Collection des Musées de Châteauroux) Somogy-Editions d'Art.
