The vessel was found in 1692 during construction of a windmill at the vineyard in Wulfen near Köthen. It belonged to the grave goods of a cremation burial of the late Bronze Age, along with another similar vessel, two accompanying vessels, a sword, multiple spearheads, and leather straps with bronze fittings. These items had all been placed on a grate made of spruce planks, and protected under a massive stone fill.
