Durancamps, interviewed for a book on his work published by Editorial Juventud, commented on this painting: “On the day of the principal fiesta in Puerto de la Selva a paper balloon was burned and in the midst of the bustle and revelry I saw some reflections that remained in my mind and were the origins of this painting.”
Durancamps’s picturesque figures and genre scenes, particularly his depictions of local bullfights in Spanish villages, are of extremely high quality. The skies express the drama and joy of these fiestas, as in the present work.
