The very first attempt at designing bus route maps for main bus stops. This spiralling diagram was known as a bus star map and whilst it never reached production, it provided the template for maps that were introduced in 2002. Today we know them as bus spider maps (though officially they’re called bus route diagrams) and there are an estimated 1,500 bespoke spider maps at major bus stops across London.
