Bust of an Old Man

National Museums Liverpool

National Museums Liverpool
United Kingdom

Under life-size portrait of an old man. The head is basically ancient and may belong with the herm on which it is restored,. The herm has strong indication of muscles in the chest and back, and the shoulders are cut off straight with square bosses, replacing the arms. The breast is inscribed ‘M. Cato’ – making this a portrait of the renowned politician. A crack runs across the right cheek, and the nose, chin, eyes and forehead have been untidily patched up. Bought by Henry Blundell as a pair to 59.148.149 (Ince 112).
