There are numerous likenesses of the court jester Joseph Fröhlich who was very popular. It is a sign of the high esteem in which the jester, who was initially called "Hoftaschenspieler" (court conjurer), was held that he was considered worthy of being portrayed. The life-size porcelain bust shows that the aritst was a trained stone sculptor as he eschewed smalls details in favour of an expressive, charateristic overall impression. The character of the cynical mocker, who did not even mince his words in the presence of the king, is thus given lively expression.
