The Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was organized in 1960 after four black college students demanded service at a Woolworth's lunch counter. The organization supported sit-ins protesting segregation. In 1964, SNCC led efforts to register African American voters in Mississippi. Later, the organization became one of the most militant civil rights organizations of the era, often clashing with more moderate groups.
