The Byodo-in Temple, located at the foot of the 2000ft Koolau volcanic range, to the west of Kaneohe on Oahu, was built in 1960 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first Japanese immgrant workers who came to Hawaii to work in the sugar plantations. The temple is a replica of the 950-year old Byodo-in Temple in Uji, Japan.
