Museum of Art & Photography
Bangalore, India

A large painted Kalamkari textile designed for hanging in Hindu temples during religious festivals: this depicts the deity Sri Venugopala Swamy, who is the form of Krishna playing the flute, surrounded by the Gopis (cow-herd girls) and the Gopas (cow-herd boys) by the Yamuna riverside. The surrounding scene depicts a herd of cows and a flock of birds. The large borders are painted with motifs of peacock and floral designs which are typical to the Kalamkari style of painting.

Detail showing Krishna and the gopis by the river, alongside the text included in the piece — naming the diety, the artist and the location of production.
