Ash Wednesday is the epilogue to four days of celebration. In this film, ants carry away pieces of paper reminiscent of the confetti strewn about during carnival in Brazil. The soundtrack, by O Grivo, relates with carnival on various levels, exploring rhythmic and melodic elements of samba, especially from the Monsueto and Ayrton Amorim song Me Deixa em Paz. Composed digitally, the soundtrack mixes two elements: background sound captured during filming and the noise of matchsticks falling to the ground.
Neuenschwander’s work is based on subjectivity grounded in the idea of transformation. Her production has great depth, full of latent meanings, and a will to create beauty out of contemporary materials and procedures.
