Zaragoza, Spain

During the first years of the century, religious themes (mainly in their moral aspects) and mythological themes especially interested Gargallo (who would always retain a certain predilection for the second), to such an extent that, according to his daughter, Pierrette Gargallo, Mythology and The Bible was his bedside books. To verify this, it is enough to review the titles of his works, from the early Leda and the reliefs dedicated to the virtues and capital sins to Antinous, Echo, Great Prophet, Uranus, David, passing through various fauns, faunesses, and bacchantes. He also left a very notable series of inks about The Last Judgment (included in this catalogue), and Cain himself was the subject of several excellent drawings, one of which bears similarity to this relief.
