  • Provenance: (Cross sale, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 28 October 1921, no. 24). (sale, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 16 May 1922).[1] (Léopold Zborowski [1889-1932], Paris). Possibly (Bernheim-Jeune, Paris), before 1932.[2] R. Baudoin.[3] (Kleimann et Cie., Paris); purchased 1950 by John Hay Whitney [1904-1982], Manhasset, New York;[4] deeded 1982 to the John Hay Whitney Charitable Trust, New York; gift 1982 to NGA. [1] Of seventeen sales held at the Hôtel Drouot on this date, only that held in Salle 10 included modern paintings. The results of that sale published in the _Gazette de l'Hôtel Drouot_ on 18 May 1922 do not include any works by Cross. [2] Reproduced in Lucie Cousturier, _H.E. Cross_, Paris, 1932, pl. 1, with no collection given; however, the photograph was supplied by Bernheim-Jeune. [3] Zborowski and R. Baudoin, according to Isabelle Compin, _H.E. Cross_ (Paris, 1964): 122. Henri Baudoin [1876-1963] was a commisseur-priseur in Paris from 1908-1942; it is unclear if R. Baudoin is related to Henri Baudoin. [4] Whitney acquisition source and date according to information sent 4 April 1984 from the Whitney Foundation, in NGA curatorial files.
