Opting to investigate the myriad of possibilities and forms within woodturning, rather than produce "signature" pieces, de Vries has created a body of work that shares a rigorous yet whimsical style. Contributing to this style is the artist's deep seated personal connection to the aesthetic of wood, fused with a passion for the physicality inherent in the process of turning. As de Vries himself explains, the joy of turning wood is the immediacy of the feedback he recieves from watching the lines and curves form right before his eyes as the pieces turn.
