March Fong Eu was elected to the California Secretary of State's Office in 1974, becoming the first Asian-American woman to be elected to a state constitutional office in the United States.. She served until 1994, when she accepted an appointment from President Bill Clinton as U.S. Ambassador to Micronesia.
