The basic form of the cursive script, is the Naskhī. This calligraphic style appears comparatively smooth as the individual characters are not arranged as strictly horizontally as in the case of the angular Kufic ductus. Its arches and the curved connecting lines between characters lend the script a dynamic appearance. Other forms of the cursive script are the Ta’līq and its derivative, the Nasta’līq, which are used especially for Persian-language texts. The way the individual lines are aligned in an incline from the upper right to the lower left is striking. The delicate quality of these scripts makes them particularly suitable for poetic texts.
