Calligraphy of Successive Rulers in Joseon Dynasty

During Joseon Dynasty, it was a customary practice to publish calligraphic works of preceding kings in order to commemorate the predecessor king’s praiseworthy achievements. The works were compiled into a book, Calligraphy of Successive Rulers. Since its first publication in 1662, the 3rd year of King Hyeonjong’s reign, many other versions were published and passed down. Among the surviving versions, this book of woodblock prints is King Gyeongjong’s compilation of the works of his predecessors including King Seonjo, King Injo, King Hyojong, King Hyeonjong, and King Sukjong.
