“John Michael Mc Donagh is a total film buff, in the old fashioned sense, it’s
all film, film, film. He references films, plays, books in a way I have never
heard from other directors. This feeds directly into the visual style he wants
to achieve and his sense of detail. He referenced Monica Vitti in Red Desert
for Kelly Reilly’s character in Calvary. When I looked at the film, the
resemblance between Vitti and Reilly was uncanny. I also knew the coat
would work perfectly in a modern setting, so we made a modern version
and I love it. I thought there was no point opting for the half measure or
something green. No one has ever picked up on this Vitti/ Reilly reference,
but a lot of people have contacted me asking where they can buy the coat!”
