Born in Cleveland, Ohio, George Ault lived in London with his family from 1891 until 1911, when he returned to the United States. During travels on the Continent, Ault saw cubist and modernist paintings, which influenced his work, along with American folk art. His paintings depict typically American scenes and they reveal Ault's fascination with light on surfaces. In 1937 Ault moved to Woodstock, NY, where he remained until his accidental death by drowning in 1948. Came's House depicts the Woodstock home of Ault's friend and art patron Cambridge Lasher.
