Ten-year-old Janis received an official Girl Scouts camera and flash set around 1956 when she was a Girl Scout. Officially known as the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, the organization was founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low after she met Gordon Baden-Powell, who founded Scouting in 1911. The Girl Scouts organization seeks to empower girls and teaches values such as honesty, fairness, courage, and citizenship. Calling itself "the world's preeminent organization dedicated soley to girls, Girl Scouts in the 21st century is recognized for much more than just delicious cookies. Various manufacturers produced cameras, over the years since the founding date, marked especially for the Girl Scouts.
