Campaign advertisement for the re-election of California Secretary of State Frank C. Jordan. The office of the Secretary of State was created by Article V, Section 18 of the 1849 California Constitution. The position was appointed by the governor until an 1862 constitutional amendment made it an elected office. Although it has historically been considered a non-partisan office, candidates nevertheless campaigned for it by party affiliation, as illustrated by this advertisement, part of Frank C. Jordan's campaign for Secretary of State.
