The category of noncommissioned officers in the Civil Guard was created in 1920, and they were initially given this gun. It was, in fact, regulation both in the Army and the corps from 1916, but it had not been widely distributed until that time. It was in the late 19th century when semi-automatic pistols began to grow in popularity, and they ended up practically replacing the revolver in both the police service and the military. Lieutenant Colonel Venanacio López de Ceballos Aguirre (Marquis of Campo-Giro) designed the Campo-Giro Model 1912 pistol. This was later modified in 1914, resulting in this model.
