Canadian despatch runner adjusting the wheel skewer on his bicycle. The wheels are equipt with German spring ties, a design that dealt with rubber shortages. The bicycle was an important vehicle during the war as it was relatively lightweight so it could be carried over obstacles. Though slower than a motorcycle, bicycles are a silent alternative.
