After escaping destruction in the Altaussee mine, Austria, the Altarpiece panels came back to their home, the Saint Bavo's cathedral in Ghent, Belgium. Canon van den Gheyn was custodian of the cathedral treasures and had stepped forward to protect the altarpiece during the Great War.
