Unlike the Han majority, Manchu women of the Qing dynasty did not bind their feet. Instead, they wore platform shoes which caused their gait to appear similar to that of women with bound feet. While most Cantonese opera costumes are modeled after clothing from the Ming dynasty,

Due to the appearance of the flared pedestal platform of these shoes, they were called "flower-pot" shoes.
