Ancient populations of the southern coast of Peru are known for their cotton cultivating and weaving tradition. Plain cloths were often decorated with animal-derived pigments. Some researchers believe that the particular style of painting with mollusk blood, as in this case, required quick execution directly by the sea, since the substance quickly changes color when extracted and exposed to air.
