The boarfish (Capros aper), also known as the stick fish, can be found in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It can reach 25 centimetres in length and has a tall, laterally compressed body. Its colour can vary from pink to reddish, and it is distinguished by its small head, large eyes and protractile mouth. This species is sexually dimorphic, with females having a larger, single-coloured and more subdued body; males are smaller, darker in colour and have yellowish transverse bands on their flanks. The boarfish feeds on crustaceans and molluscs, living in dense shoals in deep areas of rocky bottoms. However, juvenile males can venture into shallow coastal areas to feed.
