Photograph of Canadian soldiers surrounded by German machine guns that were captured at Vimy Ridge. In two-and-a-half years of war, the Canadians had captured more ground, more prisoners, and more guns at Vimy than any previous Allied offensive. A definitive success for Canada, the victory at Vimy came at the cost of over 10,000 Canadian casualties- most of which were at the hands of strtegically placed German machine guns.
