About the Work: Leo Matiz, a pioneer of abstract photography in Latin America, experimented with it from the 1940s through 1980. Although in recent years the unique body of abstract work by Matiz has gained attention, it was not recognized during his lifetime, even though his figurative photography was well established. However, he insisted on continuing to develop work that focused on abstraction. It was not until 2005 that many unpublished photographs were printed posthumously and were exhibited in Bogotá and Mexico. Caracas: Homage to Mondrian is an abstract photograph formed by a composition with buildings in construction, scaffoldings, metal bars and foliage, representing the birth of Modernism in Caracas in the 1950s. The grid of vertical and horizontal of lines refers to the work by Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), an important leader in the development of abstract painting who was also a reference for many Latin American artists working with abstraction.
